You would think that Labor leaders would learn. In 1975 Labor Prime Minister
Gough Whitlam gave the nod to Indonesia that Australia was comfortable with
Indonesia's proposed invasion of East Timor. This statement of position triggered Indonesia's
brutal invasion of that country.
Now Opposition Leader Kim Beazley has given a similar nod to China. In a
speech on April 17 Mr Beazley warned the Australian government not to upset
China over its threats to Taiwan.
"We say to the Taiwanese that they can experience decent democratic community within the framework of their ultimate incorporation in China and they should not operate in a way the rest of us do not recognise," Mr Beazley said.
Their ultimate incorporation in China? Taiwan is an independent,
democratic sovereign nation. China on the other hand, is a totalitarian
communist regime. The regime seized power by military force in 1949. Millions
have died in purges over the years. Even today, China has an appalling human
rights record.
There is no way the Taiwanese will peacefully hand over their freedom and sovereignty
to a brutal totalitarian regime.
