Law and order in 2026

Martin Lehmann - 6 November 2006

The Australian newspaper is running a series of articles predicting life in the year 2026.One editors predicts that crime rates will steadily fall over the next 20 years, because international DNA databases will catch more criminals.

Give us a break. Dumb as criminals may be, they will soon learn not to leave any DNA at a crime scene.

Based on the current situation and extrapolations of current global trends, I believe the following scenario is far more likely.

By 2026 the ethnic gangs have taken control of the streets. Over the years the High Court, in its quest for social justice, brought in a series judgements protecting and enhancing the rights of criminals. The police finally lost control following the UN Resolution of Protection of Ethnic Minorities in 2016. When adopted by the federal government, this law provided severe penalties for racial profiling and lack of cultural sensitivity in dealing with ethnic persons.

Police activity is mainly confined to dealing with white, non-ethnic, male law-abiding citizens.

Ethnic gangs rampage through the streets, robbing, raping and bashing at will. Three main gangs, the African Kings, the Eastern Tigers and the Lions of Lebanon control most of the territory. Territorial disputes from time to time result in violent gunfights and bombings with many deaths of gang members.  Each gang has links to international criminal gangs and drug cartels.

The huge escalation of crime has highlighted the differences between the haves and the have-nots.

Wealthy people live in purpose-built compounds surrounded by large walls topped with barbed wire. Entrance to the compounds is strictly controlled by armed guards. Only persons with high-security biometric ID cards can enter the compounds.

Life is relatively comfortable for inhabitants of the compounds, with their own schools together with shopping and entertainment precincts.

Modern communications allows businesses to function within the compounds. Ultra-high speed broadband combined with 3D video allows virtual board meetings and interaction with remote staff.

Helipads within the compounds and atop commercial buildings provide crime-free helicopter travel around the cities for the privileged.

For people who cannot afford to live in compounds, life is hellish. Citizens live in constant fear of their lives and their property. All restaurants and nightclubs pay regular protection money. Most other businesses pay protection money or bribes to stay in business. Only the brave or the foolhardy venture out at night. Every household has a gun for self-protection, bought at great expense on the black-market. The government of ageing Prime Minister Howard placed a total ban on private ownership of firearms in 2018. Thereafter, gun control and distribution passed to the gangs.

The only exception is NSW where violent crime has all but vanished. This was brought about when the Muslim majority in that state voted in the Islamic Party of God in the 2023 state election. The first action of the new government was to pass legislation invoking Sharia law throughout NSW.

Militias loyal to the Grand Ayatollah of Australia quickly rounded up members of the ethnic and criminal gangs and brought them before Sharia courts. The leaders were executed and the remainder given lengthy jail sentences.

Crime quickly disappeared. The Grand Ayatollah declared a public holiday in celebration.

Huge crowds thronged Martin Place chanting “We are all Hezbollah now” while white-robed police fired their automatic weapons in the air.

All hotels, nightclubs and casinos were shut down. The government resumed all of the properties in the Kings Cross area. Bulldozers flattened the area. In its place were built an Islamic university and a madrassa  catering  for 5,000 schoolchildren.

The largest mosque in the southern hemisphere was built  on the site, opening last year. Muslim leaders from around the world, including the President of the Islamic Republic of Great Britain attended the opening.

Many non-Muslim NSW people have converted to Islam. They felt the slight inconvenience of women wearing the burka and mandatory  beards for men was worth the  benefit of full citizenship.
