Killing them softly

By Anna Marshall

Saddam Hussein was a clumsy amateur when it came to committing genocide. I believe there is a far more subtle way.

If a political group wants to rid itself of a troublesome ethnic minority, the most efficient method is to alienate the target group and then destroy the self-respect and motivation of the group’s members. They will do the rest for you. No guns or chemical weapons are required.

The starting point is to get the target group to feel victimised and alienated from the rest of society. A propaganda campaign dwelling on past grievances is an excellent device. Academics and other bleeding hearts will gladly assist in the campaign free of charge.

If the target group has a primitive culture and has a connection to remote outback areas, the job is so much easier. The feelings of alienation and resentment can be accelerated by declaring that the way to redress past wrongs is for the group members to claim areas of land where they can live in remote communities, perpetuate their ancient culture and aim for “self-determination”.

Many anthropologists will rush to assist the campaign. They love the idea of preserving the “noble savage” in his primitive culture. It will give them the opportunity to write endless papers on the subject. The anthropologists will emphasise that activities such as tribal dancing and digging for Witchetty grubs is superior to the decadent Western habits of learning computer skills and job skills.

The next step is to get the group addicted to the corrosive influence of welfare. Dishing out heaps of “sit down” money so that group members never have to work should achieve this objective.

In case people challenge this destructive program, it will be necessary to stifle public discussion. An excellent propaganda technique is to take an innocuous word like “racism” (original dictionary meaning: “the notion that one’s own race is superior to all others”), emotionalise it and re-define it to denote a heinous crime worse than rape or murder. Apply this epithet to anyone challenging the campaign. This will stop most discussion. But to be really certain, create a new law making it an offence to be racist, say racist things or even think racist thoughts.

Now most of the elements of the genocide plan are in place. A large number of the group are in self-imposed exile in remote locations where there are no jobs and no hope of learning sufficient job skills to compete for jobs in a modern economy. And they are paid not to work.

Soon the group members will build up a feeling of hopelessness. There will be nothing to strive for in life apart from the vague concepts of “land rights” and “self-determination”.

As the sense of hopelessness turns to frustration and anger, the group members will most likely turn to alcohol and drugs to numb their feelings.

If the program works well, group members’ health will deteriorate, they will fight among themselves. As they become hopelessly addicted to alcohol and drugs, the men may even beat their wives and abuse their children.

To escape the horrific home life, the children may roam the streets and begin taking drugs or alcohol or sniffing petrol. It is important to keep the children trapped in this vicious, alienated lifestyle. Encourage the bleeding hearts to shriek “racist” at any attempts to move the abused children into the caring, learning environment of the majority culture.

After a while the campaign will take on a life of its own. The academics and bleeding hearts will blame the rest of the population for the terrible situation. They will demand more taxpayer funds to boost the program to provide more isolation, more frustration and more “sit-down” money. The children and younger people will believe the propaganda and begin building a hatred of the rest of the population. The hatred, combined with the feeling of being deprived of a place in the modern world, will build into a feeling of being at war with the rest of the population. The urban members may bash, rape and rob the population believing they are just taking revenge for the outrageous wrongs committed against them.

As the plan comes to fruition, the group should begin to die out from poor nutrition, alcoholic diseases and alcohol-fuelled killing of each other.

While this plan should work well in a country like Iraq , it probably wouldn’t work in an enlightened society like Australia .

Would it?
