SURVIVAL KIT
WATER
The most essential survival
item. Allow 25 litres per person in the household. Buy 25 litre (or larger) plastic drums or jerry cans and
fill with tap water. The chlorine in tap water will keep it
fresh for a considerable time. Keep the drums covered or in a
dark place to inhibit algae growth.
Also buy water purifying agents
as you may have to resort to using river or dam water.
Your hot water system holds
an emergency supply of water. Access the water by pressing the
relief valve at the bottom of the hot water unit. First, switch
off the gas or electricity to the hot water system.
LIGHTING
Stock up on torches, candles and
preferably a gas lamp. Keep a good supply of matches.
COMMUNICATION
Ensure that you have a charger unit that
operates from car to keep your cell phone operating. Also a solar or
battery-powered radio is essential.
COOKING
You may need to cook without gas
or electricity. Ensure you have a gas cooker or barbecue with more
than one gas bottle.
FOOD
Stock up on a range of long-life foods to supply protein, carbohydrate and
vitamins. Powered milk will last up to three years. Flour and
yeast for bread making can be kept for long periods in a
freezer. Keep a stock of rice and pasta in sealed
containers. Canned sardines are cheap, a good source of protein
and essential oils and have a shelf life up to three
years.
MEDICINE
Keep a well-stocked medical kit.
TOILETRIES
Life can be uncomfortable without these. Keep a good
supply of toothpaste, soap and other toiletries
CLOTHING
Make sure you have adequate
clothing and bedding to survive a winter in your climate without
household heating. Have joggers and hiking boots on hand in case
you have to travel on foot.
COMMUNICATION
Keep a portable radio with
spare batteries.
YOUR MOTOR
VEHICLE
Keep it topped up with fuel.
Carry a mini-survival kit including water, torch, medical kit
and multi-purpose pocket knife in case an emergency occurs while
you are in your car.
PROTECTION
Disruption
of water, electricity or food supplies often leads to civil
disorder. Citizens need to be able to protect themselves. A gun
can be a good means of protection of oneself and one's family.
Throughout history citizens have kept weapons to protect
themselves and their families. Compulsory military service in
neutral Switzerland means that nearly every household contains a
military rifle. In the last decade governments in Australia and
Britain, egged on by left-wing bleeding hearts, have largely disarmed the citizens while leaving weapons in the hands of
criminals. In Australia it is difficult but still possible to
legally own a low-powered rifle. Arm yourself with whatever you
feel comfortable with.
PROTECTION
FROM A C.B.R. (CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL OR RADIOLOGICAL) ATTACK.
Terrorists
could attack with anthrax or smallpox or a "dirty"
bomb ( a bomb encased in radioactive material). Check with your local army surplus store for gas masks and
protective suits. Be careful about buying outdated gas masks.
Early model gas masks contain deadly asbestos.
